Foods To Consider During Cancer Treatment

Chemotherapy along with radiation is among the more widely employed methods to treat cancer. Typically the procedures involve use of medicines or drugs (in chemo) or x-rays, gamma rays, electron beams to destroy cancer cells (in radiation).

Like with most other treatments, the therapies have their share of side effects, mostly short-term in nature.

Unlike radiation which targets cancer cells, chemotherapy targets all cells that divide. While targeting cancer cells, it even damages normal cells in the process. This makes parts of the body where normal cells divide frequently (mouth, intestines, skin, hair, bone marrow), very vulnerable to chemotherapy.

    Cancer treatment can drain your body more than you realize. So your body needs all the extra calories and protein it can get. Nutritionists say that while undergoing cancer treatment eating enough is probably just as important if not more important than eating healthy. For your body to maintain weight and improve healing capacity, you need to eat more often. Often patients have to deal with loss of appetite given the nature of the treatment. One way to work around this is by snacking more frequently. While snacks can be unhealthy, it’s not a serious problem since the snacking istemporary. Once you overcome the side effects of the treatment you can go back to a healthier diet.

  3. Easing Side Effects

    Post-treatment, it is common to find certain side effects like mouth sores, nausea, and diarrhoea, among others. This calls for taking relevant precautions and hygiene-related steps to ease the side effects. For instance, to tend to mouth sores, brush twice a day or after meals with asoft bristled toothbrush. Drink plenty of fluids to neutralize loss of body fluids from diarrhoea. Increase water intake if drinks / juices leave you with side effects. Eat a low-fibre diet since foods high in fibre can aggravate diarrhoea. This means you should prefer plain yogurt, white rice, among other low-fibre foods.
